Adjusting in the Netherlands

It’s been a while since we updated this blog. We’re in Holland now after an early termination of our trip. Although this obviously was a dissapointment for us, we’re so glad we made the decision. There was no other decision possible, really. And since we completed the trip from Shanghai to Amsterdam, we have no regrets whatsoever.

So now we need to get accustomed to life in Holland again, which is not easy to do. We still feel like we’ll catch a flight back to Shanghai soon, like so many times before in the last couple of years. But this time that will not happen. We’ll stay in Holland, which is kind of weird.

We decided to renovate my apartment in Amsterdam because we want to stay in Holland’s capital for at least a year and a half. We bought a new kitchen, bathroom and floor and expect everything to be ready in a month or so. This means we’re now still running and driving around in Holland and sleeping in a different bed almost every other night. Luckily we’re used to that now.

The first days in Holland feel good though. Seeing our friends and family again and enjoying some luxuries we never thought we would be seeing as luxuries, like lightning fast VPN-free internet, clean air, drinkable tap water, Dutch breakfast, dairy products and so on.

Every now and then spectacular images of places we visited during our trip pop into our head and make us feel really good and happy. This will happen even more once we start designing a huge photo book of our trip. Meanwhile we’re enjoying the very nice sunny weather in Holland. Right now we’re in Koudum outside at the waterfront relaxing.

Slowly we’ll be absorbed by the daily routine in Holland, especially when work will start again next month. But until then, we’ll try to enjoy our free time as much as possible and be around our family and friends.

Again, we would like to thank everyone for showing interest in our journey. It was an unbelievable trip, in big part because of you all. We’re so glad to be able to really make one of our dreams come true. It feels so good.

As mentioned before on our blog we’ll host a homecoming party in Koudum, Friesland on September 27th. All our followers are of course invited. if you plan to come, please let us know and we’ll provide more details to you.

Now let’s plan our next adventure!

Als ik geweten had dat jullie geen verblijfplaats hadden, hadden jullie in mijn huis kunnen logeren!
